in the garden II

Landscape Design by Jane Leigh Luce, http://www.handd.com/Portfolio/directory/jane-leigh-luce-listing-712.aspx.

Inspired by the Azuchi-Momoyama and Edo periods in Japanese vernacular traditions, this porch sits in a landscape of gravel and stone "river beds" and lavish plantings. The porch is linked to the house by a bridge spanning one of the "river beds".

The structure is a hybrid of current conventional timber framing, and the mortise-and-tenon inspired joinery of the Japanese precedents that guided the design.

Metal framed "super screens' obviate the need for interstitial framing, and thereby highlighting the post-and-beam character of the porch.
